September 23 was an historic day for DDG as we were honored to be named a permanent member of the Russian Green Building Council (RuGBC).
The honor came on the heels of our own AhsinRasheed being invited to speak at two separate conferences this week – first, at a major event in St. Petersburg, Russia hosted by IES and Buro Technics, and then at RuGBC’s annual summit (“The First International Conference on Sustainable Building and Eco-Innovation in Azerbaijan”) in Baku, Azerbaijan. Both events were part of World Green Building Week.
Ahsin spoke about green retail and creating the ideal commercial space, citing case studies and photos of DDG projects which feature green elements, including Akasya and Mall of Istanbul in Turkey and Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai, UAE. Ahsin discussed the hurdles DDG has encountered with educating its clients and encouraging them to make green choices with their developments. In the end it comes down to choices and cost for most. Ideally, if world-friendly materials and systems were more of a local, regional, even global requirement rather than a choice, the green initiative would be faster moving. Similar to public cigarette smoking and vehicle emission laws in the USA – things can change through policy. Ahsin encouraged the RuGBC members to think at this grander scale – making more progress not just in a particular area of the world but for the entire world by working together towards global standards.
The Russian Green Building Сouncil is a not-for-profit industry organization dedicated to accelerating development and adoption of market-based green building practices. RuGBC is a member of the World Green Building Council, the world’s largest Green Building movement.
