India’s retail design tradition derives from the bazaar: a cluster of many small shops together. DDG introduced a different modality to Viviana Mall – starting with a large, exterior entry plaza and in-line stretches of shops inside; both of which are still relatively new retail strategies for India. Other new practices include adding a hypermarket, multi-screen cinema, and prominent anchors. The mall’s instantly successful reputation as the place to go for “one-stop shopping” has proved the wisdom of moving from traditional models to a contemporary plan approach. This groundbreaking mixed-use project integrates modern retail, entertainment, and dining elements with traditional Indian retail concepts.
