Today we celebrate Giving Tuesday! A first for what we hope will become a national tradition. What is Giving Tuesday? It is a coast-to-coast movement to create a national day of giving on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. As of last week the drive includes more than 1,000 partners in all 50 states! This diverse set of partners consists of organizations, philanthropies, small businesses, large corporations and retailers all coming together to make this first ever #GivingTuesday a day of generosity that will impact millions of people. DDG, along with many others, have come together through the power of social media to create this national movement around the holidays dedicated to giving, similar to how Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become days that are, today, synonymous with holiday shopping.
We at DDG encourage our employees and those we come in contact with to feel empowered to bring on change. Our award-winning architectural design work draws praise for celebrating the human element. We want to inspire and we believe that we lead by example not only through design. We see our volunteer efforts as much more than team building activities but a way to impart change and produce a ripple effect. We hope we not only have a chance to reach out to the local and global community we find ourselves a member of as a company but that we as individuals inspire others to volunteer or donate in their own way towards causes that matter to them and their families most.
As an international company with a multi-cultural team that hails from over 16 countries, we embrace coming together. We love sharing our diverse experiences and cultures through not only our work but also socially, and especially when it comes to food. We realize how lucky we are to have this opportunity to learn from one another. Annually we want help others less fortunate in particular during the holiday season. This year we have been working on the “feed the hungry” idea: locally + globally. On a local level we are contributing to the Maryland Food Bank. Each year 450,000 Marylanders live at or below the poverty level. This past month we have asked our employees (who have in turn also asked their families and friends) to contribute non-perishable goods and have raised over a 1000 items to be donated today, Tuesday the 27th, to the Maryland Food Bank. We are contributing to the same effort on a global level through a monetary donation. Our past international efforts have supported the rain forest, water, education, and other humanitarian causes.
We know what it is like to depend on each other in our design studio and realize sometimes others depend greatly on the kindness of strangers. It really doesn’t take much but the aid ends up meaning and making a great difference almost exponentially in someone’s life that needs a helping hand. We are grateful for the opportunity to help and we respectfully challenge others to give, in whatever way they can.
Throughout the year, but particularly during this holiday season let’s start a new tradition of national generosity! To learn how you can help or to share your ideas please visit Giving Tuesday.
