Arcabil Road
Ashgabat, Turkmenistan
Arcabil Road merges planning, landscape architecture and place-making to celebrate Turkmenistan’s history and create a new center of national politics. The master plan encompasses dramatic development along 14 kilometers of new highway. To accommodate President Saparmyrat’s vision of a “White City,” white Carrera marble and grand archways, columns and spires blend seamlessly with contemporary urban design elements. Oasis Lake, an enormous oval reflecting pool, anchors the project. Star-shaped peninsulas house ministry buildings, and the Golden Age Tower rises from central Turkmenbashi Island. The tallest building in Central Asia, the globe-topped spire of the tower rises 220 meters and the base houses a national history museum/exhibition.
