Al Dhiyafa
Makkah, Saudi Arabia
Creating a graphic identity for the first major shopping mall in the Saudi Arabian holy city of Makkah posed some unique design challenges. The powerful regional influence of Makkah as a religious center prompted efforts to incorporate related symbols into the design in ways that would attract visitors to the mall without being offensive to those of Islamic faith. The strong skewed shapes and colors–lime, bright orange, dark blue, and white– reflect the mall’s contemporary tone. The logo creates both a graphic identity and a powerful sense of place, sending a constant reminder to visitors that they are in Makkah. Because of this, it is used everywhere abstracted in banners, directional signs, suspended forms, directories and other elements.
